Gathering Supplies to Make Your Own Gnomes

Materials Needed:

  • One foam cone (10.8cm x 5.6cm)
  • One foam ball (5cm)
  • Pantyhose (black) – 3 x squares roughly 5cm x 5cm
  • Fibre fill or similar stuffing material
  • Three small silicone bands
  • Wooden sticks (cut to your desired length, e.g., 2 @ 5cm)
  • Green felt fabric (30cm x 30cm square)
  • Black felt fabric (20cm x 15cm)
  • Black fur fabric (1 x 5cm x 5cm square for the beard, 2 bits for the hair)

Tools Needed:

  • A hot glue gun
  • A pair of scissors
  • A craft knife

Instructions:

Nose and Hands:

  1. Take a square of pantyhose and fill it with fibrefill to form a ball shape.
  2. Twist the pantyhose and wrap a small silicone band around it to secure. Make two hands and one nose (the nose should be bigger).
  3. Trim off the excess material, leaving a little for gluing.

Feet and Legs:

  1. Cut the foam ball in half for the feet. (2) Use a bread knife or a craft knife but be careful not to cut yourself (This step should be done by an adult)
  2. Glue each cut piece onto a piece of felt (BLACK) trim around the outside leaving a little bit extra for the turn up. Snip around the edge and then glue the extra bit up all the way around.
  3. Glue on the pieces for the top (BLACK) making sure the felt goes to the edges. Trim off the excess. You can add some trim or ribbon to the bottom edge to tidy this part up if you want to.
  4. Take a wooden leg piece and glue lengthwise onto the 3 cm end of the 3cm x 6cm strip of felt and roll on, then glue down at the end. Make sure you leave a bit of wood at each end- which will be glued into the body and the foot. Do the same for the other leg.
  5. Decide where you want the leg to go in on the foot-mark-then poke a hole with a pair of scissors (Best done by an adult). Do both sides then squirt some hot glue in. Push in your legs (wooden part) and have them on a slight angle – facing inwards – due to the size of the bottom.
  6. Decide if you want your feet looking straight ahead or pointing outwards and put a little glue on the side and hold the feet together (this is for stability) and make sure they sit flat.

Arms:

  1. Cut pieces of green felt fabric roughly 6cm long and 4-5cm wide for the arms.
  2. Take a piece of felt for each arm and glue a hand onto one end.
  3. Roll the material lengthwise, ensuring the silicone band doesn’t show and the seam is in the middle.
  4. Repeat for the other arm.

Body/Head:

  1. Use the foam cone as a template and cut out a slightly larger circle from the green felt fabric.
  2. Glue the foam cone onto the felt circle. Snip around the edge and glue the material up the sides of the cone.
  3. Glue a cardboard tube onto the foam cone, trimming off the pointed part of the cone.
  4. Trim the tube to your desired forehead height, folding in the excess to create a flat head shape.
  5. Lay out your biggest piece of green felt fabric, line up the bottom edge, and glue the side down. Continue gluing around, taking your time to ensure a smooth surface. Trim any excess felt hanging down but avoid trimming upwards.
  6. When you reach the other end, cut a straight line and glue this end down. Trim off any extra.
  7. At the top, cut in on each corner and glue down. This part will be covered by hair, so it doesn’t need to be too fancy.

Nose, Beard, and Brow:

  1. Glue the nose onto the face.
  2. Cut the black fur fabric into a 5cm x 5cm square for the beard. Glue it on, and trim the sides at an angle to make room for the brow.
  3. Cut out the brow shape from the provided pattern.
  4. Roll up where indicated, stopping where it changes direction. Glue the brow onto the face, across the nose, and glue the top part as well.
  5. Cut thin strips of black felt to make # on Frankenstein’s face. Glue these strips on, covering the cut edges.

Hair, Bolts, Feet, and Arms:

  1. Use paint or a marker to mark the top of the legs. Place the body on the legs to transfer the marks.
  2. Use scissors to make holes at the marked spots. Apply hot glue to the holes and insert the legs, ensuring the feet sit flat on the surface and face forward.
  3. Decide where you want the arms and glue them on.
  4. Cut the grey felt piece into a 3cm x 5cm square. (This will make 2 bolts at once) Roll up and glue to halfway. Then cut the loose bit in half so there is a bit on each side. Cut off a little more from the inside of each loose bit. Now roll these bits up and glue down so you should have 2 identical shapes on each side. Cut it in half. They should now look like bolts for his neck. Glue the narrower end onto each side of his neck/head
  5. Cut the black fur fabric for the hair: one piece measuring 3.5cm x 3.5cm for the top and front, and another measuring 3.5cm x 2cm for the back.
  6. Glue the smaller piece at the back, ensuring the hair/fur runs down towards the back. Glue the front piece as well, with the hair/fur running to the front.
  7. Comb the fur forwards and trim as desired.
  8. Add any desired decorations to personalize your Frankenstein gnome.
