Materials and Tools Needed

  1. A hot glue gun
  2. A craft knife or a long-bladed kitchen knife
  3. One foam egg 6cm across x 8cm high for the body
  4. One foam egg approx. 5cm x 3.5cm for the shoes – cut in half lengthwise
  5. Pantyhose – color of your choice. 3 x squares roughly 5cms x 5cms
  6. Fiberfill or something similar
  7. 3 small silicone bands
  8. 1 pipe cleaner
  9. Material: A soft felt is best as it can be manipulated and doesn’t fray.
  10. Purple felt 30cm x 30cm
  11. Black felt 15cm x 20cm
  12. Green glitter foam 25cm x 20cm
  13. Gold glitter foam 2cm x 2cm

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Create a Halloween Witch Gnome

Nose/Wart and Hands:

  • Use a square of pantyhose and stuff it with fibrefill to form a ball shape.
  • Twist the pantyhose tightly and wrap it around a small silicone band.
  • Repeat this step to create two hands and one nose. Ensure that the nose is slightly larger.
  • To make a wart (optional), thread a needle with a single knotted thread matching the pantyhose color.
  • Insert the needle at the base of the nose and bring it out where you want the wart.
  • Pull up some fibrefill to create a bump and stitch small circles around it.
  • Push the needle back through the nose, pull firmly, and secure. This will give the wart a realistic appearance.
  • For wart hairs, use a thicker black thread doubled.
  • Knot one end of the thread and go from the base of the nose up through the wart.
  • Determine the desired hair length and cut the thread.
(Note: Please refer to the accompanying video for a better understanding of this step)

Feet:

  • Carefully cut the foam egg in half to create two feet.
  • Use a bread knife or a craft knife but exercise caution to avoid injury.
  • Glue the curved side of the foot onto green glitter foam, ensuring there are no wrinkles.
  • Trim off any excess foam.
  • Glue the foot onto the base material and cut off any excess.
  • Feel free to add any additional trim or decoration at this stage.

Body:

  • Place the larger foam egg on the body material, ensuring it wraps around evenly.
  • The rounder end of the egg serves as the bottom, while the pointer end acts as the top (hat area) with more fabric.
  • Wrap the material around the foam egg, pulling firmly, and apply glue as you go.
  • Glue the edges down and ensure both sides are even.
  • As the material may not cover the entire bottom end of the foam egg, use a small circle to cover the gap.
  • Create a gathering stitch close to the edge of the bottom end.
  • Apply some glue around the bottom and under the material, then pull the gathering stitch to hold it in place until dry.
  • Glue the small circle over the gap on the bottom, being mindful not to use excessive glue.
  • At the top, there should be extra material that can be pulled up, twisted, and secured with a silicone band.
  • Apply glue before twisting the material, allowing the excess material to form the gnome’s hat.

Hat:

  • Make a small cross-shaped cut in the middle of the brim (large circle) and set it aside.
  • Cut two small slits in the buckle and thread the hat strap through.
  • Position the buckle in the center of the strap.
  • Fold a pipe cleaner in half and twist it around itself for added strength.
  • Glue the bent end of the pipe cleaner at the tip of the hat peak to create a curved shape (omit this step for a straight peak).
  • Flip the hat over, ensuring the pipe cleaner is underneath.
  • Glue the strap with the buckle in the middle, avoiding the brim end.
  • Manipulate the strap to curve slightly around the hat.
  • Flip the hat over again and glue down the long edge to form a peak, ensuring the pipe cleaner remains loose.
  • Avoid gluing the rest of the pipe cleaner, as it should be positioned in the middle.
  • Slightly stretch the brim edge if necessary to ensure a proper fit.
  • Starting from the join, slowly and carefully glue the peak onto the brim, maintaining a consistent distance from the edge.
  • If needed, enlarge the hole in the hat base (where the cross cut is) by trimming some of it.

Arms, Nose, and Hair:

  • Take a piece of triangle felt for the arm and glue the hand in the center of the longest side, ensuring the silicone band is not visible from the other side.
  • Apply glue along the front edge and sides of the felt, then fold it in half. Use glue sparingly.
  • Repeat this step for the other side.
  • Decide on the nose’s placement, making sure the seam is on the side where an arm will cover it later. Glue the nose on, ensuring the cut end of the nose faces upward.
  • For the hair, cut a small upside-down V shape in the middle of the fur or hair material along the bottom edge.
  • Apply glue at the top of the nose and attach the fur or hair material, positioning the upside-down V around the nose and gluing the rest of the hair around it.
  • Tidy up the nose by gluing around the base to hide any messy bits.

Feet, Arms, and Hat Placement:

  • Pull the hair/fur material up and out of the way, then determine the direction in which you want the feet to face.
  • Apply glue on the body where the feet will be attached.
  • Glue one foot on the seam side at the bottom near the small circle and hold it until the glue dries.
  • Attach the second foot by applying glue on the opposite side and sitting the body down onto it. Hold it until the glue dries. Add more glue if necessary for a secure fit.
  • With the hair still out of the way, part the fur/hair on the side and glue the first arm in that spot. Additional glue may be required further down. Repeat for the other side.
  • Place the hat on the gnome’s head and adjust it to cover the extra material and the edge of the fur/hair. The excess material should be tucked inside the hat.
  • With the buckle in the front and the seam at the back, glue the front of the hat just above the nose area. Then, move to the back and glue it down, followed by the sides. Use a conservative amount of glue and ensure any messy bits are hidden inside the hat.
